We’ve added some of Debbie’s Portuguese heritage to our naming convention with Bica’s name, which is Portuguese for Espresso Shot Surprise - She’s black with a hint of burgundy red; like an espresso, and she came a bit early, which was a surprise. Bica arrived on 328 days, rather than the 345 days which is average for an alpaca. Although they say to allow 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after the due date, which is still within the typical range. Some alpacas have even gone as long as 369 days to give birth!

So here is a little video of this espresso shot at 1 week.
The squeaking sound you hear in the background is Bica’s
mother, Pooh, showing some concern that her baby is
going so far away from momma’s side. But Bica doesn’t
seem too concerned.

So now the wait is on for Miski and Bella to have their crias. Miski is typically a 330 day girl, and as I post this on 10/25/08, she is at 328 days. I’ll bet she’ll wait until Monday morning when both Mark and I will be away for a few hours. Bella is due on November 10th although she has been looking mighty uncomfortable lately, and we have no birthing records on her to make a guess from.

So stay tuned! Now, if Mark would let me get a barn cam we could all watch along. :-)
